September’s Café Scientifique is presented by Brigette Gouda, a Senior Lecturer and PhD student from UON. Brigette is also contributing to the Northamptonshire Oral Health Strategy Working Party.
Brigette Gouda, a Senior Lecturer and PhD student at UON will discuss findings from her doctoral research examining the potential role of dental nurses in supporting early oral health interventions for infants and toddlers during mandated contacts led by Specialist Community Public Health Nurses.
With extensive professional experience in dental nursing and oral health promotion, her work seeks to address oral health inequalities through promotion, collaboration, and workforce empowerment. Drawing on the perspectives of SCPHNs, dental nurses, and parents or caregivers, the research highlights opportunities for enhanced collaboration, earlier engagement with families, and strengthened preventive education, alongside the structural, professional, and system-level barriers that currently limit impact.
Supported by the University and the Centre of Health Sciences and Services, this doctoral research has led to Brigette co-leading a new Dental and Oral Health research strand within the Centre and contributing to the Northamptonshire Oral Health Strategy Working Party. These collaborations are supporting improvements in oral health and addressing inequalities affecting children and families in local communities.
