Extreme Right Ideology Aware: Online Radicalisation in Extreme Right Spaces, 17 May 2024

The Interconnected World

£20.00

Description

This one-day training package is aimed at people whose work engages with the Prevent Agenda and want a deeper understanding of the British and international extreme right. It will include short lectures, interactive group activities and opportunities to network with other professionals working in the field.

Detailed Description

The extreme right space is fast changing and complex. What draws people to such extremism? What ideologies underpin the extreme right? What narratives do they use to recruit? How do they network online? What risks do they pose? How do we separate the extreme from the mainstream?

This one-day course will help equip professionals with a deeper knowledge of the extreme right in Britain. It is aimed at police officers, hate crime workers, teachers and other educators, NGOs, and other professionals whose work engages with the extreme right or the Prevent Agenda more broadly.

The course is delivered by experts in the field and will cover the following broad themes:

  • An introduction to the extreme right in the UK: The landscape of extremism is complex and can be confusing. We will help you make sense of the different groups active in the current UK context and will also provide historical background that will help contextualise current right-wing extremism.
  • How these extreme groups network and connect, especially in online spaces: Online networks are now a vital way for extremist groups to recruit new members, disseminate materials, and promote hate. We will consider how they use social media and other online spaces, paying particular attention to which demographic groups may be vulnerable to radicalisation, and looking at the threat posed by neo-Nazi accelerationism.
  • Social media trends and the extreme right: TikTok “Tradwives”, YouTube Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs) and twitter homesteaders might seem like niche and unrelated social media communities. We will draw out the ways that extreme right groups are targeting specific demographics – including those not normally seen as at risk for radicalisation, like young white women – for recruitment, and how they are using social media networks to weaponise more mainstream interests (for instance, environmentalism, gender and sexuality, homemaking) into means of radicalisation.

There will be short lectures followed by group activities, as well as plenty of opportunities for informal discussion and networking with other practitioners. The day will include a buffet lunch, included in the small registration fee, and we will have a number of free places available for charitable and educational organisations.

Sessions will be led by Dr Rachel Moss with contributions from Prof. Paul Jackson and Dr Daniel Jones. For more details about the team’s research profile, please check out Dr Moss, Prof Jackson and Dr Jones PURE pages.

The event will take place in the Sunley Hotel at the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus. For more details on the venue, follow this link:
